José María Urvina

José María Urbina ( born March 19, 1808 in Quillan de Píllaro; † September 4, 1891 in Guayaquil ) was the sixth President ( 1852-1856 ) of Ecuador.

He was born in Quillan de Píllaro near the Tungurahua. One of his training took place at the Naval Academy in Guayaquil. In Guayaquil he later became governor, and he died there. He proved Remarkable courage in a naval battle in 1828 between a Peruvian corvette and two ships from Great Colombia. Before he became president of the country, he was Congressman for Guayas ( province). One of his first actions as president was the abolition of slavery and the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1852 out of the country.
