José Vianna da Motta

José Vianna da Motta (originally spelled Viana da Mota, born April 22, 1868 São Tomé, † June 1, 1948 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese pianist and composer.

Vianna da Motta studied piano and composition from 1875 to 1881 at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Lisbon. In 1882 he moved to Berlin to Xaver and Philipp Scharwenka, 1885 Franz Liszt in Weimar (one of Liszt's last pupils ) and 1887 to Hans von Bülow to Frankfurt am Main. In October 1905 he took on 10 piano pieces for the Welte-Mignon reproducing piano, including three of his own compositions.

Vianna da Motta appeared in the episode as a pianist and was from 1915 to 1917 director of the master class at the Conservatory in Geneva in the footsteps of Bernhard Stavenhagen. From 1919 to 1938 he was director of the Conservatorio Nacional in Lisbon.

From Vianna da Motta's compositions, particularly the symphony Patria, op 13 works for piano and orchestra and works for solo piano, some have been recorded in recent years on CD.

Motta's correspondence with Ferruccio Busoni was published, as Mottas memories of Hans von Bulow's master class and a book about German music and musicians.
