Josef Berg

Josef Berg ( born March 8, 1927 in Brno, † February 26, 1971 ibid ) was a Czech composer.

Berg took from 1946 to 1950 studied composition at the Conservatory of his hometown in Vilém Petrželka. In parallel, he studied at the Philosophical Faculty of Masaryk University musicology with Jan Racek and Bohumír Štědroň. After graduation, he worked as a music editor for Czech Radio in Brno, before he made ​​his own as a freelance composer.

In his compositions mountain was strongly influenced by Moravian folk tunes, but took advantage of the technical and expressive possibilities of modern compositional techniques. In addition to chamber music and orchestral works (including three symphonies ) and vocal music he composed six chamber operas, whose libretti he wrote. He also worked as a music critic for newspapers and journals. His last opera, Johannes doctor Faust, was completed by Miloš Štědroň and Miloslav Istvan.
