Josef Bohuslav Foerster

Josef Bohuslav Foerster ( born December 30, 1859 in Prague, † May 29, 1951 in Nový Vestec, near Čelákovice ) was a Czech composer.

Foerster, the son of composer Josef Foerster, studied at the Prague Conservatory. He moved with his wife, the opera singer Bertha Kaiserslautern to Hamburg, where he worked as a critic and since 1901 as a teacher at the conservatory. There he met Gustav Mahler, with whom he formed a close friendship soon. From 1903 to 1918 Foerster lived as a critic and teacher in Vienna. Then he got a job as a teacher at the conservatory of his hometown. In 1921 he became professor of composition and director of the Institute in 1922 until 1931. Afterwards it was until 1939 Head of the Czech Academy. In 1946 he was appointed as National Artist.

Foerster composed operas, five symphonies, symphonic poems, suites, overtures, a cello and two violin concertos, chamber music, sacred choral works, masses, motets and songs. Foerster's style is particularly influenced by Antonín Dvořák. Later makes a partial approach to modern genres noticeable. His romantic embossed musical ideal, however, has never denied Foerster.

His 1942 and 1947, published in two volumes autobiography " The Pilgrim " is an important document of the cultural life of that time. Josef Bohuslav Foerster was also active as a painter, primarily of landscape paintings.
