Josef Engel (anatomist)

Josef Engel (born 29 January 1816 in Vienna, † April 3, 1899 ) was an Austrian pathologist and anatomist.

Life

Josef Engel finished the study of medicine at the University of Vienna, where he in 1839 with the academic degree Dr. med graduated. From 1840 to 1844 he was an assistant for pathological anatomy under Professor Rokitansky. After that, he was from 1844 to 1849 professor of topographic, since 1847 also for pathological anatomy and physiology in Zurich. In 1849 he accepted an appointment at the University of Prague, where he was appointed a full professor of anatomy. After working in Prague, he worked from 1854 to 1874 as a professor at the Josephinum in Vienna. Angel was the first in Vienna, which held well-attended microscopy courses. After 1874, the Josephinum was dissolved, angel received no job at the University of Vienna due to its liberal attitude.
