Josef Fuchs (cyclist)

Josef " Sepp " Fox ( born July 24, 1948 in Einsiedeln ) is a retired Swiss cyclist. He was one of the most successful cyclists of Switzerland in the 70s.

Since 1968, Josef Fuchs rode as an amateur cycling race, from 1971 to 1981 as a professional. In 1969 he was at the road world championships in Brno third in the team time trial of the amateurs, together with Walter Bürki, Bruno Hubschmid and Xaver Kurmann, and in 1971 vice-champion in the individual pursuit World Cup on the track. 1972 and 1973 he was Swiss national road champion.

Fox drove mainly in his professional time for Italian teams and acted as a " precious water carrier " for prominent drivers like Luis Ocaña Pernia, Francesco Moser and Giuseppe Saronni, but could be placed far forward whatsoever. In 1981, he won Liège -Bastogne -Liège. Further victories reach him in 1971 at the Giro del Mendrisio, 1972 at Giro di Toscana and 1981 at the Grand Prix of Lugano. Many times, he started at the Grand Tours. At the Tour de France in 1975, he was eighth overall; Giro d' Italia 1979 and the Giro in 1980, he finished each ranked eighth in the standings, 1981, he was fifth. In 1978 he was third in the Tour de Suisse, 1980 and 1981 each second.

As compensation for cycling Fox also ran cross country and was ninth in 1970 the Swiss Championship. Later he also started at " Ironman " competitions, ran the marathon and went mountain bike race.

After his retirement from cycling Fuchs opened a bike shop in Zurich, which existed until 2009. He also worked with the frame builder Pietro del Po.

Honors

1969 Josef Fuchs was elected together with Burki, Hubschmid and Kurmann after her third place in the World Championship road to Swiss Team of the Year.
