Josef Haslinger

Josef Haslinger ( born July 5, 1955 in Zwettl, Lower Austria ) is an Austrian writer and since May 2013 President of the PEN center of Germany.

Life

Haslinger was born in Lower Austria's Waldviertel and grew up in Great Meinharts for large Gerungs. In Vienna he studied philosophy, theater studies and German literature and received his PhD in 1980 on the aesthetics of Novalis. With Gustav Ernst Haslinger was from 1977, the literary journal wasps nest out. In the 1980s, he was for many years Secretary of the Graz Authors ' Meeting, the largest association of writers in Austria.

In his work Haslinger exerts social criticism and focuses on dealing with the history of the country Austria. Haslinger has taught since 1996 as a professor of literary aesthetics at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig. As a member of senior management, he was repeatedly Director of the Institute of the University of Leipzig.

Haslinger is a member of PEN Center Germany and, since May of 2013 two years its president.

In his work published in 2007 Phi Phi Iceland Haslinger recorded his experiences during the Thailand - holiday his family over Christmas 2004. Haslinger, his wife Edith and the children Sophie and Elijah experienced first hand on Phi Phi Iceland the tsunami. Only with luck survived all family members to the natural disaster.
