Josef Kompalla

Josef Jupp Kompalla ( born March 13, 1936 Katowice, Upper Silesia ) is a former German - Polish ice hockey player and umpire. He is a member of the IIHF Hall of Fame (since 2003) and the Hall of Fame Germany and agencies of the Federal Cross of Merit.

Career

As a player

Even as a player, he was able to celebrate some successes. In his youth he played for Gwardia Warsaw, 1954-1958 for Gornik Katowice in the first Polish league. For the Polish national team, he ran twice. Also two B matches he played after his flight for Germany. In the ice hockey league, he worked at Preussen Krefeld and was 139 times in Germany's top league on the ice.

As referee

After the end of his playing career in the summer of 1969 Kompalla moved to the refereeing of the German Ice Hockey Federation. Until 1992 he was Impartial in over 2,000 top-flight games and 157 international matches, including at the Olympics (1976, 1980, 1984 ), World Championships ( 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986) or the Spengler Cup. The highlight of his career managing the decisive game of the Summit Series in 1972 viewed between the USSR and Canada. As part of the Germany Cup 1992, he finished his career with the role of the Soviet Union against Czechoslovakia in Stuttgart. In the 70s and 80s, he was elected 13 times in a row by readers of the magazine Hockey Referee of the Year.

For the fans, especially the DEG, Kompalla was often controversial. They chanted: "Oh, hurt me the eye when I Kompalla the seh ". Even after that remained Kompalla the sport of ice hockey obtained by he took over the training of young referees and the task of the Referee observer at the World Championships. To date, he is DEL Referee observer, a member of the DEL Disciplinary Committee and directs celebrities and anniversary games.

His daughter Nicole was in the late 1980s also ice hockey referee in the Bundesliga.
