Josef Ludwig Holub

Josef Ludwig Holub ( born February 5, 1930 in Mladá Boleslav, Czechoslovakia, † July 23, 1999 near Mladá Boleslav ) was a Czech botanist. By describing newly discovered species and the reorganization of the systematics of several groups of plants, he contributed to overview spending on the Czech and European flora. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Holub ".

Life

Josef Holub studied at the Charles University in Prague and taught there after graduating in 1953 from specialist botany.

He was a founder of the Botanical Institute of the Czech Republic, where he has worked for a long time. He participated in the creation of the Department of Biosystematics and the founding of the magazine published by the Institute Folia Geobotánica & Phytotaxonomica.

Josef Holub 1991 President of the Czech Botanical Society, after he became in 1990 editor of the magazine ( " Preslia " ) of this company.

The scientist went up to his death on field trips to numerous countries, but mainly in Central Europe.

Work

Josef Holub was active scientifically, particularly in the fields of taxonomy and nomenclature of vascular plants.

He was familiar with various methods; However, his works are marked by the phytosociological method, what in particular his contributions to vegetation mapping in the Czech Republic and Slovakia provide information.

An example of an order that is influenced significantly by the biologist, the club mosses ( Lycopodiales ). His achievements also include the development of a classification for the horsetails ( Equisetaceae ). Other genera, about Holub anfertigte extensive studies are worm ferns ( Dryopteris ), Lastraea and Thelypteris. Most recently, he worked mainly to the genera Rubus and hawthorn (Crataegus ).

Josef Holub was one of the main authors of the Flora of the Czech Republic and the flora of Slovakia.

One of the merits Holub was to have created one of the first studies of threatened species in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. His contributions led to the first edition Red lists for these two countries.
