Josef Mocker

Josef Mocker ( born November 22, 1835 in Cítoliby, Bohemia, † January 16, 1899 in Prague) was a Bohemian architect and restorer.

Life

Mocker studied at the Technical University in Prague and at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. As a member of the Czech Academy of Science and Art, he was also Oberbaurat.

He represented the a neo-Gothic purism. That is, unlike many of his colleagues in historicism he tried, Gothic pure and unadulterated to imitate. However, his critics accused him that he did not take into account the character of the buildings. He also wrote articles on building restoration for several journals. He participated in the restoration and reconstruction of a number of castles, palaces and churches and also designed new buildings. In 1873 he was appointed as the successor of Joseph Kranner with the completion of the St. Vitus Cathedral. Under his leadership, the Wenzel chapel and the south tower was renovated and built the western façade with two towers. After his death, Kamil Hilbert took over the construction management.
