Josef Paul Kleihues

Josef Paul Kleihues ( born June 11, 1933, Rheine, † August 13, 2004 in Berlin) was a German architect and professor.

Life and work

Kleihues 1956 made ​​his Abitur at the Gymnasium Dionysianum in Rheine. He then studied at the University of Stuttgart ( pre-diploma 1957) and the Technical University of Berlin ( 1957-1959, Graduate) architecture. 1973 to 1994 he held various teaching positions at the University of Dortmund.

After graduating, he worked in the office of Peter Poelzig. From 1962 to 1967 he formed together with Heiner Moldenschardt a shared office. Together, they realized in Berlin, among others a residential development in Gropius city and an old man club in Berlin- Reinickendorf. Also their urban report for Berlin- Ruhwald 1967 became known. In August 1968, he was presented with Moldenschardt in an issue of German Bauzeitung as one of the representatives of the younger generation in Berlin. In September 1968 he was at the exhibition "Diagnostics for building in West Berlin " the group " Special 507" involved, which took a critical look with the Berlin urban development this time.

In other experts Kleihues gained early 1970s with his building for the Berlin city cleaning notoriety, the interested layman, he was known primarily as a planning director of the International Building Exhibition 1984 in Berlin. Here, he coined the term " critical reconstruction " which to this day far-reaching impact just on the Berlin city has shape: There is a concept of reconstruction of destroyed urban structures that existed before the Second World War. Pre-modern town plan is reconstructed by the modern contrast structures and buildings are often destroyed. This Kleihues therefore formulated a doctrine that set clear boundaries against the urban planning concepts from the 1950s to 1970s. With his buildings, but especially through his writings, he significantly shaped the architectural appearance of Berlin in the 1980s and 1990s. With his son Jan Kleihues 1996, he founded the firm of architects Kleihues Kleihues.

Kleihues died at the age of 71 years on 13 August 2004 in Berlin. He was buried at Forest Cemetery in Berlin's Dahlem district of Steglitz -Zehlendorf.
