Josef Pieper

Josef Pieper ( born May 4, 1904 in Elte ( Rheine ); † 6 November 1997 in Münster ( Westphalia ) ) was a German Christian philosopher of the 20th century.

Life

Pieper studied at the universities of Berlin and Münster, philosophy, law and sociology. A decisive for him teacher was Erich Przywara. After working as a sociologist and freelance writer Pieper was from 1946 also professor at the Pedagogical University in Essen (until 1972) and full professor of philosophical anthropology at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster. He taught there from 1946 as a lecturer and as a professor of 1950 to 1972. Upon his retirement he held until 1996 lectures.

In 1982 he was awarded the Balzan Prize for Philosophy, 1987 the State Prize of North Rhine- Westphalia. In 1990 he was awarded the Honorary Ring of the Gorres Society.

Idea background

His views are rooted primarily in the scholasticism of Thomas Aquinas, as well as in the teaching of Plato. In 60 years of creative work as a philosopher and writer Pieper has the wisdom tradition of the West conveyed in clear language, and demonstrated their lasting relevance.
