Josef Proksch

Josef Proksch (* August 4, 1794 in Reichenberg, † December 20, 1864 in Prague) was a Czech pianist and composer of German descent.

Life

The blind at the age of thirteen Proksch was a pupil of Jan Antonín Koželuh. It opened in 1830 in Prague, the music education institution. The teaching method of simultaneous interplay of several students in piano lessons followed by it was continued over a hundred years. His most famous piano and music theory student was Bedřich Smetana.

Proksch wrote besides several textbooks for piano lessons a concerto for three pianos, piano sonatas, masses and cantatas and edited for classroom use numerous orchestral works for four to eight pianos.

His son Norbert Ludwig Proksch designed in 1883 as organist the opening of the Municipal Theatre in Liberec. His daughter Marie Proksch was known as a pianist and composer.
