Josef Rufer

Leopold Josef Rufer ( born December 18, 1893 in Vienna, † November 7, 1985 in Berlin) was a German musicologist, teacher, editor and publicist.

Rufer studied from 1919 with Arnold Schoenberg, Alexander Zemlinsky and Alban Berg. From 1925 to 1933 he was assistant to Arnold Schoenberg at the Berlin Academy of Arts. He also taught music theory and worked as a music critic. Since 1956 he was a lecturer for twelve-tone technique at the University of Arts Berlin and lectured at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music. He cataloged the estate of Schoenberg and managed the complete edition of his works. Rufer was, inter alia, Teacher of Gislher adhesive, Isang Yun, Hans Eugen Frischknecht, Roland Kayn and Hans Werner Henze.
