Josef Šíma

Josef Šíma ( born March 18, 1891 in Jaroměř, Bohemia, † July 24, 1971 in Paris) was a French painter of Czech origin.

Life

He is one of the major exponents of surrealism and later of abstract painting after the Second World War.

Šíma was in 1920 in Prague, co-founder of the artist group Devětsil. He moved in 1920 to Paris and joined the movement of the Surrealists. In 1926 he became a French citizen.

Šíma befriended in 1921 with the artists Amédée Ozenfant, Pierre Jeanneret and Albert Gleizes in, the staff of the magazine " L' Esprit nouveau " were back then.

In 1927 he began working with the future authors of the journal Grand Jeu, René Daumal, Roger Roger Gilbert - Lecomte and Vailland. Šíma was the artistic director of her magazine. He always remained closely associated with the artistic and literary avant-garde of Prague. In 1934 the group founded the " Czech Surrealists ". Josef Šíma 1959 was participated in documenta 2 in Kassel.
