Josef Smistik

Josef " Pepi " Smistik (* November 28, 1905, † 28 November 1985) was an Austrian football player. Alternating with the Vienna- Leopold Hofmann player he played as a center half in the legendary Dream Team. With his original club Rapid Pepi Smistik could also win in the finals the Mitropa Cup in 1930 and three times Austrian champion at the third attempt.

Career

Rise at Rapid for Mitropacupsieger

Pepi Smistik began his career at that time unterklassigen Viennese suburbs FC Stadlau, where he played with his brother Franz Smistik. Pepi Smistik followed his brother to Hütteldorf, where he was a regular player as a center-half after a few weeks. This position had held until then Josef Brandstätter, the crowd had just ceded. In his first season Pepi Smistik won the OFB Cup and reached the final of the Mitropapokals, the forerunner of the European Cup. Also in the next season in 1928, the young players reached the final of the Mitropapokals, but this time the Hungarians Ferencvárosi FC was beaten. Pepi Smistik came after a poor first leg result of 1:7 in Budapest in leg no longer used. The first two championship wins, however, he scored in 1929 and 1930. Pepi Smistik had already made ​​its debut on May 6, 1928 in a 3-0 victory over Yugoslavia in the Austrian national team and was considered at the time of the miracle team as long veteran. In this era of center half played, among others, in the 5-0 victory over the Scots on the European mainland were unbeaten to date. In addition, the state of the newly crowned 1931 Rapid captain in a 6-0 victory over Germany in Berlin, the rematch in Vienna, which he won with the team a 5-0 victory, as the legendary game against England on course. Until the World Cup 1934 Pepi Smistik remained in all games with the national team then undefeated. Already one year after leaving the national team left the Rapid captain and his club, moved back to his youth club FC Stadlau and worked until 1945, yet the FAC and in Krems the Kremser SC as player-coach. In Stadlau, he worked on the young striker Ernst Ocwirk, which he successfully submitted his skills as a center half - Ocwirk was later on that position twice the captain of the world selection.

A trainer and the time after football

After the Second World War, the runners moved to the pure Trainermetier and led, among others, the Swiss club FC Schaffhausen (1952-1955) in the highest league. Also in the Austrian A- League Pepi Smistik worked again: Austria Vienna, he supervised in season 1958/59 as section leader. His main job, however, was the driver of the liqueur company " Wolfrum ". Towards the end of his life suffered from the former Dream Team players from Parkinson 's disease, at his 80th birthday, he died in the Lainz hospital following a stroke. Smistik was buried in the cemetery Stadlauer.
