Josef Starzer

Josef Johann Michael Starzer ( baptized on January 5, 1726 in Vienna, † April 22, 1787 ) was an Austrian composer and violinist of the pre-classical period.

Life

About Josef Starzers Curriculum there is no reliable information that he was possibly his sister, the singer Catherine Starzer (1752-1775), a pupil of Giuseppe Bonno and violinist Giuseppe Trani. In the period 1752-1775 it is detected as a violinist in the orchestra of the Vienna Burgtheater. As already established composer of ballet music, he followed in 1759 with the Vienna choreographers Anton Christoph Hilverding ( 1710-1768 ) to St. Petersburg, where he found employment as a concertmaster and court composer. Finally, in 1768 he returned to Vienna and wrote another ballet music. Among the most successful this time included " Roger et Bradamante " (1771 ), " Adèle de Ponthieu " (1773 ) and " Gli Orazi e gli Curiazi " (1774 ). In addition to his contemporaries Georg Christoph Wagenseil and Georg Matthias Monn Starzer one of the pioneers of Viennese Classicism.

Work

Much of the music Starzers was performed at the concerts of Viennese society. Besides the 250 ballets and musical comedies, including " The three tenants ," an oratorio, 12 symphonies, several concertos, including a Violin Concerto in F Major, Divertimenti, 20 string quartets, trios and other chamber music for string and wind instruments.
