Josef Urban (sportsman)

Josef Urban ( born June 17, 1899 in Prague, † September 2, 1968 ) was a Czechoslovakian wrestler.

Career

Josef Urban began in Prague with the rings. Shortly after the first World War he joined the police and started for the Police Sports Club ( " AFK Stráže bezpečnosti " ) Prague, before he was started for the athlete club " Nusle " Prague. Mid-1920s, he was the best Czechoslovak wrestler in the heavyweight in Greco- Roman style. In 1925, he won for the first time the Czechoslovak championship in the heavyweight division and was at the European Championship 1926 in Riga his debut at an international championship. Behind the German champion Georg Gehring he took it the 2nd place and placed himself there after all before the Swedish champions Johan Richthoff.

Even a year later, at the European Championships 1927 in Budapest, Josef Urban won a medal. He came in third place. At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 he scored three victories. But these victories ranged only for 5th place, because he, somewhat unexpectedly, the Austrian Eugen Wiesenberger subject. The second defeat in the tournament against Sweden Rudolf Svensson other hand, was expected.

Counter Svensson he lost the European Championship 1929 in Dortmund. But he nevertheless reached with three wins 3rd place. At no medal, it was enough for him at the European Championships 1930 in Stockholm. After defeats against George Gehring and Johan Richthoff he ended up in 4th place. Also at the European Championships in 1931 in domestic Prague Josef Urban came not in the medal ranks.

The biggest success of his career he succeeded in 1932 at the Olympic Games 1932 in Los Angeles. With a surprising victory over the Germans Georg Gehring, who had previously defeated the Swedish favorites Carl Westergren, he won the silver medal and led the overthrow of Gehring's supposed Olympic champion on the 4th Place. After this tournament, Josef Urban started at any other international championships more.
