Joseph Ahrens

Joseph Ahrens ( born April 17, 1904 in Summer Sell; † 21 December 1997 ) was a German composer and organist.

Life

Ahrens was born in Westphalia Sommersell son of an organist and lived in Berlin since his student days. After receiving his degree in Münster, he studied in Berlin with Alfred Sittard and Max Seiffert. Since 1928, he taught as a professor at the Berlin Academy for School and Church Music. From 1931 to 1940 he was organist of the Berlin Philharmonic. Since 1934, he served as organist at the St. Hedwig's Cathedral (Berlin) and 1945 to 1957 as organist at the Salvator Church (Berlin- Wilmersdorf ). From 1945 to 1969 he was professor of church music at the Hochschule für Musik Berlin, whose Deputy Director he was from 1954 to 1958. In 1963 he became a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Ahrens is considered one of the most important exponents of a renewed Catholic church music.

His main works include the choral cycle "The Holy Year ", which contains a number of cantus firmus edits. Ahrens ' line rare spelling is characterized by distinctive themes of education, extended tonality and focus on liturgy and worship. In 1959 he applied consistently to the twelve-tone technique.

His tomb is located in the forest cemetery Zehlendorf.
