Joseph Alessi

Joseph Alessi Jr. ( born 1959 in Detroit ( Michigan), United States) is an American, predominantly classic trombonist. He is at the Juilliard School since 1985, principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic and teachers.

Life

Joseph Alessi Jr. was born in Detroit in 1959 and attended high school in San Rafael ( California). His father, Joseph Alessi, Sr. was a professional trumpet player and his mother sang in the choir of the Metropolitan Opera. His father taught him the trombone playing, which meant that he was already 16 years old won the audition for the orchestra of the San Francisco Ballet. A year later, he enrolled in the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied 1977-1980.

During his third year at Curtis, he was one of his teachers ( M. Dee Stewart) asked if he wanted to occupy its place in the Philadelphia Orchestra temporarily as second trombonist. Alessi won then also the official prelude, which he definitely got the position. After a few years in this orchestra, he spent one season to the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, before he won the audition as a solo trombonist with the New York Philharmonic in the spring of 1985.

1990 Joseph Alessi made ​​his debut as soloist with the New York Philharmonic with the work of Fantasy for Trombone by Paul Creston. In 1992 he gave the premiere of the Trombone Concerto by Christopher Rouse, it even won a Pulitzer Prize.

Joseph Alessi occupies a solid teaching position at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York and he has every summer, a ten-day intensive workshop in which is known under the name " Alessi Seminar".

He was awarded the annual prize of the International Trombone Association 2002.

Game style

Joseph Alessi's trumpet playing is often praised for its musicality. It has a versatile sound quality and technical control. He embodies the American style with a clear, singing tone and a slight vibrato. Its sound is supported by a large instrument, an Edwards 0547 ", and a mouthpiece of their own design (similar to a Bach 3G). His performance repertoire covers the whole spectrum from Baroque to contemporary composers.
