Joseph B. Kershaw

Joseph Brevard Kershaw ( born January 5, 1822 Camden, South Carolina, † April 13, 1894 ibid ) was an officer of the United States Army, lawyer, politician and Major General in the Confederate army.

Was born on January 5, 1822 Camden, the son of a congressman Kershaw 1843 lawyer. A year later, 1844, he married Lucretia Douglas. The marriage produced a son and four daughters were born. He participated as a volunteer in the Palmetto Regiment part of the Mexican-American War. 1852 and 1854, Kershaw was elected to the Senate of South Carolina. After the outbreak of the Civil War he placed the Second South Carolina Infantry Regiment at which he presided as a colonel.

On February 13, 1862 followed by his promotion to brigadier general.

In this capacity he participated in the Peninsula campaign, part of the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam and the Battle of Fredericksburg. In 1863 he fought at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Battle of Chickamauga. Promoted In May 1864, Major General, he took over the command of the Army of Northern Virginia Division under the command of General James Longstreet. Kershaw's Division was part battles of Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor and the siege of Petersburg. He was among the generals who were captured after the skirmishes at Saylor 's Creek.

After his return he was in 1865 for one year President of the Senate of South Carolina. From 1877 to 1893 he worked as a judge. In the same year he took over the post office in Camden.
