Joseph Bergler

Josef Bergler ( born May 1, 1753 Salzburg, † June 25, 1829 in Prague) was a painter, etcher and director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.

Life

He received his first training from his father, the sculptor Josef Bergler the Elder (1718-1788) in Passau in Lower Bavaria and then went for further training to Milan and Rome. In 1786 he returned to Passau as a cabinet painter of the Prince Bishop's Residenz in Passau back. In 1800 he became director of the newly founded Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. One of his most famous pupils was Joseph of Fiihrich from Kratzau in northern Bohemia.

Was succeeded by his adopted son and corrector Franz Christian Waldherr ( 1784-1835 ).

Works

Numerous church images in Passau and the environment in Lower Bavaria and neighboring Austria originate from Bergler. He then worked in Prague, the capital of Bohemia. He finished paintings from the history of the country, etchings and portraits of and designed in 1808, the tomb of Bishop Leopold Graf von Thun und Hohenstein in the cemetery of the Town in Prague.
