Joseph Biner

Joseph Biner SJ (* July 16, 1697 in Gluringen, † March 24, 1766 in Rottenburg am Neckar) was a Swiss Catholic theologian, Jesuit canonist.

Life

In 1715 Biner entered the Jesuit Order. His ordination took place 14 years later, in 1729, instead.

From 1730 to October 1737 he taught philosophy at the High School in Rottenburg am Neckar ( 1730), the University of Dillingen ( 1731) and the University of Ingolstadt (1734 ), in the years 1737-1743 dogmatics at the Jesuit college of Lucerne, the University of Innsbruck and finally 1744-1759 Canon Law at the Universities of Innsbruck and Dillingen (1752 ) and Amberg ( 1758).

From 1760 to 1765 was Joseph Biner rector of the Albertina in Freiburg and 1765 and in the following year rector in Rottenburg. He held until his death in this position.

Work

Joseph Biner was a major player in the clashes against heresy, mainly in Switzerland. All his published, subsequent works have based on the experience with the " heretics " a polemical coloring. The resulting 1745 to 1762 eight -volume work ( quartos ) of the church and world history with special reference to the ecclesiastical law is regarded as one of the most comprehensive canonical writings since the Middle Ages.

His last book Short term today's faith disputes is an examination and refutation of the various Protestant faiths.
