Joseph Buffum, Jr.

Joseph Buffum Jr. ( born September 23, 1784 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, † February 24, 1874 in Westmoreland, New Hampshire ) was an American politician. Between 1819 and 1821 he represented the State of New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Joseph Buffum attended the common schools and then studied until 1806 at Dartmouth College in Hanover (New Hampshire). After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he started in Westmoreland and Keene to work in his new profession.

Politically Buffum was a member of the Democratic- Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1818, which were held all across the state, he was the fourth parliamentary seat from New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he entered on March 4, 1819, to succeed Salma Hale. But until March 3, 1821 he completed only one term in Congress. During this time Spain ceded Florida to the United States.

After his time in Congress, Joseph Buffum was appointed in 1825 a judge of the Court of Appeal of New Hampshire. Later, he was also active in agriculture. He died in February 1874 in Westmoreland at the age of 89 years.
