Joseph Calasanza von Arneth

Joseph Calasanz, Ritter von Arneth ( born August 12, 1791 in Leopoldschlag, † October 31, 1863 in Karlovy Vary ) was an Austrian archaeologist and numismatist.

Life

In the monastery of St. Florian, he was ready to enter high school in Linz. Since 1810 he pursued legal, numismatic and archaeological studies. He soon got a job at the Imperial Coin and Antique Cabinet and was tutor in the house of Prince Dietrich stone. 1816-1819 he traveled with the young Prince Joseph Dietrich of stone. From 1824 to 1828 he was Professor of History in Vienna. Then he had an administrative activity for the imperial collections. Since 1840 he was director of the k.k. Coins and Antiquities Cabinet at Vienna, Member of the Imperial Central Commission for the Study and Conservation of monuments and University Professor at the University of Vienna. He became known through numerous writings on numismatics, archeology and art history.

Arneth married on 19 June 1817 in Weilingau with Antonie Adam Berger, their son was the historian Alfred von Arneth.

His grave is located in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group 14 A, number 49). In 1894 in Vienna Ottakring ( 16th district ) was named the Arnethgasse after him. After his wife's Adambergergasse is named in the 2nd district Leopoldstadt.
