Joseph Cordeiro

Joseph Marie Anthony Cardinal Cordeiro ( born January 19, 1918 in Bombay, India, † 11 February 1994 in Karachi) was Archbishop of Karachi and cardinal.

Life

Joseph Cordeiro received his philosophical and theological education in Kandy, Bombay and Oxford. He received 24 August 1946, the sacrament of Holy Orders in Karachi and then worked as a chaplain in Hyderabad and Karachi in Pakistan Archdiocese. After completing further studies he conducted in 1951 to 1953, a Catholic school in Quetta. From 1953 to 1958 he served as pastor and rector of the minor seminary in Karachi.

Pope Pius XII. appointed him on May 7, 1958 Archbishop of Karachi. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of Hyderabad in Pakistan, James Cornelius van Miltenburg OFM; Co-consecrators were Francesco Benedetto Cialeo OP, Bishop of Multan, and Leonard Joseph Raymond, Bishop of Allahabad in India. He was the first native priest who became bishop in Pakistan. Joseph Cordeiro was involved in the planning of the Second Vatican Council and was a participant of the Second Vatican Council in the years 1962 to 1965.

Pope Paul VI. took him on March 5, 1973 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte to the College of Cardinals. Joseph Marie Anthony Cordeiro Cardinal took part in the subsequent period in numerous synods and represented the Pope on several occasions as Papal Legate. Since 1972, he participated in the CCA - FABC ( Federation of Asian Bishops ' Conferences ).

He died on 11 February 1994 in Karachi and was buried in the caves next to the Cathedral of Karachi.

He was a participant of the conclave in August 1978 and October 1978.
