Joseph David Sinzheim

David Joseph Sinzheim ( born November 16, 1745 in Trier, † February 11, 1812 in Paris ) was the first rabbi in Strasbourg and in 1807 Chairman of the Napoleonic Sanhedrin ( Consistoire central israélite ).

Sinzheim, son of Rabbi Isaac Sinzheim von Trier and brother in law of heart Cerfbeer of Medelsheim, was a member of the May 30, 1806, convened by Napoleon notables. His August 15, 1806 Napoleon's birthday in Paris synagogue on German sermon was instrumental in the positive opinion of Napoleon about the Jews. On this occasion Sinzheim received from Napoleon the promise never to curtail the rights of Jews as French citizens.

On February 9, 1807, four days after resolution of the Assembly of Notables, the Napoleonic Sanhedrin gathered. Chairman, was appointed by the French Minister of the Interior, Sinzheim. From 1808 to 1812 he was also Chief Rabbi for the District of Israelite Consistory Strasbourg.

Sinzheim is seen as leading French Talmudist of his time. He was the author of a recently fully printed by Machon Yerushalayim Yad Dawid (1799 ).
