Joseph E. Brennan

Joseph Edward Brennan ( born November 2, 1934 in Portland, Maine) is an American politician. He was from 1979 to 1987 Governor of the State of Maine.

Early years and political rise

After primary school, Brennan was 1953-1955 soldier in the U.S. Army. He attended Boston College until 1958 and then studied at the University of Maine law. There, he graduated in 1963.

Between 1965 and 1971, Brennan MP in the House of Representatives from Maine. Since 1970 he was district attorney in Cumberland County. From 1973 to 1975 he was a member of the Senate of Maine. In 1974 he applied unsuccessfully for the nomination of his Democratic Party for the office of governor. Instead, he was 1975-1977 Attorney General of Maine. In 1978 he applied again to the governorship. This time he was nominated by his party and elected by the citizens of Maine with a large majority.

Governor and congressman

Joseph Brennan took up his new post on January 3, 1979. After a re-election in 1982 he was able to exercise it until 7 January 1987. Brennan was a member of several associations Governor at this time. His term as governor was uneventful.

Between 1987 and 1991 he represented his state in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. In the years 1990 and 1994 he applied unsuccessfully each for a return to the office of the Governor of Maine, and in 1996, failed in his attempt to be elected to the U.S. Senate. Since 1999, Joseph Brennan is a member of the Federal Maritime Commission, an agency that deals with the overseas trade. Brennan is married to Constance Brennan, with whom he has two children.
