Joseph Gaertner

Joseph Gardener ( born March 12, 1732 in Calw, † July 14, 1791 in Tübingen ) was a German physician and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Gaertn. ".

Gardener studied medicine in Tübingen and Göttingen. After graduation he traveled to Holland, France, Italy and England.

In 1760 he became professor of anatomy in Tubingen, 1768 Professor of Botany and Director of the Botanical Garden in Saint Petersburg. He already came back in 1770 to Calw, because he could not stand the northern climate. 1772 his son Karl Friedrich was born, the botanist was himself.

After Joseph gardener the genus Gaertnera Lam was. from the plant family Rubiaceae ( Rubiaceae ) named.
