Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini

Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini ( born August 10, 1797 in Munich, † February 18, 1848 ) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Zucc. ".

Life and work

Zuccarini began after leaving grammar school in 1813 at the ( present ) Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich in 1815 to study medicine at the University of Erlangen, where Christian Nees von Esenbeck was his teacher in natural history. In 1819 he returned to Munich, where he worked in the Botanical Garden at St. Francis of Paula cabinet. In 1823 he was an adjunct at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and professor of botany at the Royal Lyceum, he also received in 1824 a lecturer at the medical-surgical establishment in Munich.

In 1826 he was appointed as associate professor, in 1835 as Professor of Agricultural Botany and Forest Botany at the University of Munich. In 1836 he was also second curator at the Munich Botanical Garden. The Bavarian Academy of Sciences appointed him in 1827 as an associate member in 1839 he became a full member of this learned society. From 1837 to 1844 Zuccarini was also a member of the forced lots society Munich.

Zuccarini began after 1820 with the systematic processing of the Brazilian plant collections by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (especially Cactaceae ) and the data collected by Philipp Franz von Siebold in Japan plants.

Zuccarinis power is next in his findings on the systematics and geographical distribution of plants, which he won on plant taxa from the Alps and Pre-Alps region with its studies.
