Joseph Gilles Napoléon Ouellet

Joseph Gilles Napoléon Ouellet PME ( born August 14, 1922 in Bromptonville, Quebec, Canada; † 13 August 2009) was Archbishop of Rimouski.

Life

Gilles Ouellet joined in 1941 the Congregation of the Société des Missions - Etrangeres (PME ) in the case and received on 30 June 1946, the ordination. He studied at the seminary in Sherbrooke (1934-1941), Pastoral Theology at the mission seminary in Pont- Viau (1942-1947) and at the Pontifical Gregorian University (1947-1950), where he was also in 1950 received his doctorate in canon law, and at La Salle College in Manila ( 1955).

From 1950 he worked in the Prelature of Davao. He was chancellor and secretary to the bishop Clovis Joseph Thibauld and Secretary General. From 1955 to 1957 he was director of the Catholic Action. In 1957 he was Superior General of his Order in Canada. He was also a 1967-1977 national director of the Pontifical Society of Missionary Children (Holy Childhood), national director of the Pontifical Society Propagation of the Faith. He also committed himself to the Pontifical Society of St. Peter Apostle.

Pope Paul VI. ordered him in 1968 for the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Gaspé. He received his episcopal consecration on November 23, 1968 Emanuele Clarizio, Apostolic Delegate to Canada; Were co-consecrators Louis Lévesque, Archbishop of Rimouski, and Louis Joseph Fortier, Archbishop of Sherbrooke. He was from 1977 to 1979 chairman of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Canada ( CECC / CCCB ). In 1977 he was a delegate to the CECC / CCCB at the Synod of Bishops on catechesis in Rome. From 1983 to 1987 he was Chairman of the Council for the Laity in Quebec (Comité de l' Assemblée épiscopal you laïcat of évêques du Québec ( AEQ ) ), he also devoted himself to the Order of Knights Chevaliers de Colomb ( Knights of Columbus ), and Filles d ' Isabelle. From 1987 to 1989 Gilles Ouellet was Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Social Affairs of the CECC / CCCB and Chairman of the AEQ 1989-1991.

1992 to his retirement request was granted by Pope John Paul II. Until 1999, he was still active in pastoral ministry and devoted himself to the Order of Knights Chevaliers de Colomb.
