Joseph H. Bottum

Joseph H. Bottum ( born August 7, 1903 in Faulkton, Faulk County, South Dakota; † 4 July 1984 in Rapid City, South Dakota ) was an American politician ( Republican) of the State of South Dakota in the U.S. Senate represented.

After attending the public schools in his hometown of Joseph Bottum continued his education at Yankton College and the University of South Dakota continues its Law School in Vermillion he graduated in 1927. He was admitted to the bar and began to practice in Minnesota in Saint Paul. In 1932 he became a prosecutor in Faulkton, from 1937 to 1943 he was head of the tax authority of South Dakota (Director of taxation ).

1942 Bottum applied unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the office of Governor of South Dakota. He had another internal party defeat in 1950 at the accept attempt to become a deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives. His first political office he held from 1961 as deputy governor of his state, until he was appointed successor to the late Francis H. Case in the U.S. Senate on July 9, 1962. There he remained until January 3, 1963. The by-election to the mandate he lost gossamer to Democrat George McGovern. This was 50.1 percent of the vote, Bottum 49.9 percent.

His political career was terminated then, later, he was still judges in the seventh Judicial District of South Dakota.
