Joseph Horovitz

Joseph Horovitz ( born May 26, 1926 in Vienna, Austria ) is a British composer and conductor.

He attended from 1936 the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna and in 1938 was referred with a variety of classmates under the cynical term " retraining " of the school because of his Jewish ancestry. Shortly thereafter, he emigrated with his family to England. There he studied music and modern languages ​​at New College, Oxford. Then he went to the Royal College of Music in London and studied with Gordon Jacob composition. Subsequently, he completed his study of composition for a year with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. His musical career began in 1950 to 1951 as music director of the Bristol Old Vic Company in Bristol. He then worked as a ballet and opera conductor at various international companies, with whom he toured Europe and the United States. He obtained with the music to various TV series, such as Lillie, Rumpole, The Search for the Nile, The flight against slavery, Wessex Tales and Partners in Crime ( Detective Blunt ) International notoriety.

Since 1961 he has been professor of composition at the Royal College of Music, London. In 1970 he was member of the Presidium of the Composers' Guild of Great Britain. From 1969 to 1996 he was a member of the Board of the Performing Right Society.

From 1962, he shifted the focus of its activities increasingly on composing. His oeuvre includes 16 ballets, among which the well-known Alice in Wonderland from 1953, two one-act operas ( The Dumb Wife libretto Peter Shaffer and Gentleman's Iceland libretto Gordon Snell ), concertos for violin, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, euphonium, tuba and percussion and a very popular and often played jazz concerto for harpsichord. A growing number of works written for wind band and brass bands. He got the Commonwealth Medal in 1959 and many other awards for his compositions.
