Joseph Jastrow

Joseph Jastrow ( born January 30, 1863 in Warsaw, † January 8, 1944 in Stockbridge ) was an American psychologist.

Life and work

Jastrow came in 1866 as son of Rabbi Marcus Jastrow ( 1829-1903 ) in the United States. He received his doctorate in 1887 at Granville Stanley Hall - the first scientist in the United States in Psychology. In 1888 he received a professorship at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. The local Department of Psychology built on Jastrow and kept it until 1927. From 1927 to 1933 he taught at the New School for Social Research in New York City.

1893 Jastrow was head of the psychology department at the World 's Columbian Exposition. In 1900 he was president of the American Psychological Association.

He is the author of several books and popular science books on Sigmund Freud, on parapsychology and general psychology. Jastrow was co-editor of Psychological Review and other scientific and popular journals.

Joseph Jastrow was married to Rachel Szold, the sister of Henrietta Szold.
