Joseph Kabui

Joseph Kabui (* probably 1954 in Panguna, Central Bougainville; † 7 June 2008 Buka, North Bougainville ) was a politician in Papua New Guinea. He was from 2005 to 2008 the first President of the Bougainville Autonomous Region. He was already before the Civil War in the 1980s, Premier of North Solomones Province (now Bougainville ).

Joseph Kabui was born in Panguna ( Central Bougainville ) probably 1954. Some sources give as the birth year about 1950.

Kabui was close to during the almost 10 years of civil war on the Papua New Guinea island of Bougainville Bougainville Revolutionary - Army ( BRA). In the course of which he had a falling out after some time with their leader, the hardliners Francis Ona. Along with numerous other leaders of Bougainville in 1998 he agreed to a truce. In 2001, he signed together with these, the Bougainville Peace Agreement, which stipulates a broad autonomy of Bougainville of Papua New Guinea (PNG). It was also agreed that after another 10 to 15 years, a referendum on full independence of Bougainville Autonomous Region to be held from PNG.

In the elections to the presidency of Bougainville in 2005 Kabui went with an absolute majority ( nearly 38,000 valid from 69 385 votes) emerged as the winner. The great questions of the Presidency of the respected politician in Bougainville and overseas were gaining economic independence of Bougainville and the consolidation of peace under the motto "peace by peaceful means".

He died on 7 June 2008 in Buka ( North Bougainville ) on a long-standing heart condition.
