Joseph Lanner

Joseph Lanner ( born April 12, 1801 in St. Ulrich near Vienna, † April 14, 1843 Dobling in Vienna) was an Austrian composer and violinist. Along side Johann Strauss ( father) as the founder of the Viennese waltz.

Life

He was born in the house at the Mechitaristengasse 5 in the 7th district of Vienna. Very little is known about his beginnings as a musician. As a child, he began to compose dance pieces. His musical career began after completion of training as a violinist engraver. At the age of 12 he joined the orchestra of his teacher Michael Pamer, where he later Johann Strauss sen. met, whose long-time friend, but also musical competitor, he should be. Later, he led an orchestra that had emerged from a trio founded by him.

In 1829 he was appointed music director of the redoubt; short time later, he took on the additional true the director of the Vienna regimental band. It was followed by several positions as music director in various hotels.

Joseph Lanner was a prolific composer. The number of his compositions in the hundreds. His musical legacy includes mainly waltzes, Landler, gallop, potpourris and dances and marches. In his compositions, for the first time is the typical structure to be found, which should be characteristic of the Viennese waltz. Joseph Lanner was married in 1828 with Franziska Jahn. Their children were the dancer Catherine Lanner, composer August Lanner and the equally gifted, died early Franziska Karoline Lanner ( 1836-1853 ). Lanner, who was divorced court on 21 September 1842 by his wife, lived from 1838 with the Viennese butcher daughter Marie Kraus together. On October 6, 1843 it was joined in Oberdöbling his posthumous son Joseph Carl Maria Kraus to the world.

Lanner died in 1843 at the age of 42 years of typhus in the house at the high school road 87 in the 18th district. He was buried first at the old cemetery in Döblinger Oberdöbling which was abandoned later. After his exhumation, he and Strauss Father on June 13, 1904 next to each other on the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 32 A, number 16; Strauss: number 15) reburied in graves of honor. Lanners tomb was from k.u.k. Court master stonemason Summer & less designed. The old grave stones of Lanner and Strauss father were included in the opened in 1928 in place of the cemetery Strauss - Lanner Park design with.

In 1894 in Vienna Dobling ( 19th district ) was named the Lanner street after him.
