Joseph Louis Elzéar Ortolan
Joseph -Louis- Elzéar Ortolan ( born August 21, 1802 in Toulon, † March 27, 1873 in Paris) was a French lawyer and writer.
Ortolan studied law in Aix -en- Provence and Paris in 1829 and received his PhD. He became known through the writings Explication historique of institute de Justinian (1827 ) and Histoire de la législation romaine (1828 ). He initially worked as a librarian at the Cour de cassation and in 1830 Secretary General of the Parquet de Paris.
He taught constitutional law at the Sorbonne and received in 1836 a chair of comparative criminal law at the University of Paris. In addition to scholarly writings Ortolan also published a book of poems ( Enfantines moralites, 1845) and a paper on Dante (Les pénalités de l' Enfer de Dante, 1873). In Paris, the rue Ortolan was named after him, in the Toulon Avennue Joseph Ortolan.
Ortolan brother Jean- Félicité -Théodore Ortolan was an expert on the Law of the Sea, his son Eugène Ortolan was known as a composer.
