Joseph Ludwig Raabe

Joseph Ludwig Raabe ( born May 15, 1801 in Brody, † 22 January 1859 in Zurich ) was a Swiss mathematician.

Raabe's parents were quite poor. Therefore, he had to early earn his living by he gave private lessons. In 1820 he then also began in Vienna at the Polytechnic, the study of mathematics. In the autumn of 1831 he moved to Zurich. He habilitated in 1833 and was then a high school teacher and lecturer at the University. In 1855 he became a professor at the newly founded Federal Polytechnic.

Raabe was known for the eponymous Raabe criterion which is used for verification of convergence or divergence of infinite series. According to him, even the so-called Raabe integral of the gamma function

In addition, he published a three -volume work on differential and integral calculus ( Zurich 1839-47 ) and 1857-58 two volumes Mathematical messages.
