Joseph M. Newman

Joseph M. Newman ( born August 7, 1909 in Logan, Utah; † January 23, 2006 in Simi Valley, California ) was an American film director.

Life

Newman began his career at Metro -Goldwyn -Mayer at the age of 16 years starting from the bottom and worked his way up through various positions to assistant director. His first feature film was Clear All Wires! of 1933, in which he assisted George W. Hill. He was nominated twice for Best assistant director for the Oscar in 1936 for David Copperfield and in the following year for San Francisco. Between 1938 and 1949 he led under the name Joe Newman initially directed in short films. In 1949 he made ​​the film noir Abandoned with Raymond Burr and Jeff Chandler. In 1952 he directed the adventure film The Red Skies of Montana with Richard Widmark Jeffrey Hunter and Richard Boone and a few years later the B-movie science fiction film This Island Earth IV is not responding. 1959 was the circus film The World of Sensations with Victor Mature, Red Buttons and Peter Lorre, who was nominated for a Laurel Award.

In 1961 he made ​​his last feature film, after which he worked as a television director and directed episodes of the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone. In 1965 he retired from show business. In 2004 and 2005 he was interviewed for films about Cecil B. DeMille and Greta Garbo.
