Joseph Maria Christen

Joseph Anton Maria Christians ( baptized on 22 February 1767 in Buochs ​​, † March 30, 1838 at the castle Thornberg ) was a Swiss sculptor.

Life

Joseph Maria Christian, son of " Heglimalers " Hirtes and woodcarver Johann Jakob Walter Laurenz Christians began in 1785 training with the portrait painter Johann Melchior Wyrsch in Lucerne, but soon turned to the sculpture, worked from 1788 to 1791 in Rome under the direction of Alexander Trippel and then settled in Basel.

Among his works are a statue of Niklaus von Flue, the group Angelica and Medor (1791 ), busts of Salomon Gessner, Johann Jakob Bodmer, Hans von Hallwyl, Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, Gottlieb Konrad Pfeffel and a Hermenbüste Napoleon. His son was Raphael Christians.
