Joseph Mendelssohn

Joseph Mendelssohn ( born August 11, 1770 in Berlin, † November 24, 1848 ) was a German - Jewish banker.

Life

He belonged to the Mendelssohn family and was the eldest son of Moses Mendelssohn. He was brought up among others by Joseph Engel. In 1792 he founded the Society of Friends, an association of Jewish bachelor who supported the ideals of the Haskalah with like-minded people. Three years later, in 1795, he started his own business as a banker. 1804 joined his brother Abraham, the father of Fanny Hensel and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, one in the bank Mendelssohn.

In Horchheim bought Mendelssohn 1818 Palais and let the neighboring park to build a garden and tea house around 1830 by Johann Claudius von Lassaulx. In the palace were some famous personalities as a guest, such as his nephew Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Alexander von Humboldt.

In the Jewish cemetery in Nice Allee 22, 10435 Berlin, the family tomb with the grave stones of Joseph Mendelssohn ( 1770-1848 ), his wife Henriette Meyer ( 1776-1862 ), his daughter Marianne Seeligmann is ( 1799-1880 ) and his son of Alexander Mendelssohn (1798-1871)
