Joseph Noel Paton

Sir Joseph Noel Paton FRSA, LL. D. (* December 13, 1821, † December 26, 1901 ) was a Scottish artist.

Life and work

Joseph Noel Paton came from a family of weavers who produced mainly damask and so acted. For a short time Joseph Noel Paton was also enters into this business. However, he had a strong urge to create artistic and studied in 1843 for a short time at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

He painted in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites and mainly dealt with subjects from history and fairy tales, he also painted allegorical and religious subjects. His first paintings Ruth Gleaning was issued by the Royal Scottish Academy in 1844. He was awarded a number of prizes. Two of his most famous works - The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania (1846 ) and The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania (1847 ) - are now in the National Gallery of Scotland.

1850 Paton was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1858 he married Margaret Furrier. From the marriage seven children were born. From Queen Victoria, he was raised to the peerage in 1867. In 1878 he received the title of LL.D. from the University of Edinburgh.

The eldest son, Diarmid Noel Paton (1859-1929), was professor of physiology at the University of Glagow. His second son, Drederick Noel Paton, went to India.

In memoriam

Under the influence of the news of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 he exhibited at the summer exhibition at the Royal Academy from his painting In memoriam. This shows a group of women who cling to in the face of oncoming rebellious sepoys anxiously together. The public reaction to this image was so strong in the face of Nachrichtungen about the siege of Kanpur and the massacre in Bibighar that Joseph Noel Paton again withdrew the work and painted over. The rebellious sepoy was replaced by an oncoming Scottish regiment, what the viewer suggested a happy ending for the beleaguered women.
