Joseph P. Comegys

Joseph Parsons Comegys ( born December 23, 1813 in Dover, Delaware, † February 1, 1893 ibid ) was an American politician ( Whig Party ) and judges.

Life

Joseph Comegys was the son of Cornelius P. Comegys, who later became Governor of Delaware was. He came to the family seat Cherbourg in Dover (Kent County) to the world.

After attending private school in Dover, he studied at the later U.S. Secretary of State John Middleton Clayton, whom he was to succeed as a senator, law and was admitted to the bar in 1835. As a lawyer, he worked in the episode in Dover. He married John Clayton's niece Margaret Douglass; the couple had three children.

Public offices

Comegys was first elected in 1843 as Whig member for a two year term in the House of Representatives from Delaware. 1849 was followed by two more years in this Parliament chamber. In 1852 he was part of a commission for the revision of the Constitution of Delaware.

On November 19, 1856, he entered the U.S. Senate to succeed the late John Clayton. But he only acted as an interim solution, decided not to run again and left the Congress already on January 14, 1857, when Martin Waltham Bates, a successor for Clayton remainder of the term had been elected until 1859.

Many years of independent legal work joined in, until he was elected to the Supreme Judge 1876 ( Chief Justice ) of Delaware. He took this office on May 18, 1876, remained there until his retirement for health reasons to January 26, 1893; his successor was Alfred P. Robinson. A few days later Joseph Comegys died in his hometown of Dover.
