Joseph Partsch

Joseph Partsch ( born July 4, 1851 in Schreiberhau, Lower Silesia, † June 22, 1925 in Bad Bramstedt, Vogtland ) was a German geographer and professor.

Life

Partsch studied from 1869 to 1874 Classical Philology, History and Geography at the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelm University in Breslau. Among his teachers was Carl Neumann ( geographer ). In 1874 he received a doctorate in phil .. Already habilitation following year, he was 1875/76 Associate Professor of Geography in Wroclaw. In 1876, he became the A.O. Professor of Geography and Ancient History appointed. Since 1884 Full Professor, Partsch was chosen for the academic year 1899/1900 as rector. In his rectorial address on 15 October 1899, he dealt with the geographical work of the 19th century. In 1905 he moved to the University of Leipzig. After 17 years of service in 1922 was made professor emeritus.

Partsch was one of the most important geographers turn of the century. One of his priorities was Greece and especially the Greek islands he using geographical and altphilologischer methods examined ( monographs on Corfu, Leucas, Cephalonia and Ithaca ). He made ​​important contributions to the study of the Ice Age by he underwent as the mountains of the High Tatras and the Black Forest geological investigations. Josef Partsch was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (since 1909) and the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences (since 1922), Honorary Doctor of the Universities of Geneva and Athens and the carrier Carl Knight Medal of the Geographical Society of Berlin.

His son is the legal scholar Joseph Aloys August Partsch. The lawyer Karl Josef Partsch, the media scholar Marianne Grewe - Partsch and the biologist Karl Partsch are his grandchildren.

Partschs extensive estate is kept in the archives of the Leipzig Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography.
