Joseph Platz

Joseph Place (* April 11, 1905 in Cologne, † December 30, 1981 in Manchester (Connecticut), United States) was a Jewish German / American chess master.

Chess

Place first played in Germany. In various tournaments, he defeated, among others, Ludwig Engels, Georg Kieninger and Rudolf Spielmann. In 1928, he won without a lot loss in Karlsruhe the championship of the Rhineland and received the title Rhenish Master. In the U.S. he became friends with Emanuel Lasker and played in the 1939 and 1940 with him many training games.

Life

Place completed a banking education, and then studied medicine. As a doctor he worked from 1932 at the Municipal Hospital in Offenburg. Because of his background, he fled to the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933, first to Switzerland and from there to New York. Here he worked at several hospitals. In 1952, he moved to East Hartford. His best historical Elo rating was 2398th This he achieved in August 1948. Place was married to Esther space.
