Joseph Schalk

Joseph Schalk ( born March 24, 1857 in Vienna, † November 7, 1900 ) was an Austrian pianist.

Together with his brother Franz Schalk, he was a pupil of Anton Bruckner. In addition, he shared a friendship with the composer Hugo Wolf. He taught as a professor at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna.

Joseph Schalk is today well known as a piano Arranger of the symphonies of his teacher Bruckner. He was thus able to achieve a greater level of awareness for these works, however, he often took strong, often disfiguring and changes to them before. Even Joseph Schalk was instrumental in the ( also the work structure of the compositions destructive ) orchestrations of Bruckner's symphonies involved by his brother Ferdinand or lion.

In his will put Bruckner Schalk as the executor of his scores. It's probably his fault that many sketches were lost to the unfinished finale of the 9th symphony.
