Joseph Sokolsky

Josif Sokolski ( Bulgarian Йосиф Соколски, German [ deprecated] Joseph Sokolsky, * 1786 in Nowa Machala, now part of Gabrovo, then Ottoman Empire, † September 30, 1879 in Kiev, Russian Empire, now Ukraine) was a Bulgarian priest, founder of the bulgarian Orthodox monastery named after him today Sokolski and first head of the bulgarian Uniate Catholic Church.

On December 30, 1860 Sokolski converted to the Roman Catholic Church. On April 8, 1861, he was called by Pope Pius IX. consecrated in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican bishop and with the title of Vicar Apostolic leader of the Bulgarian Catholic Church. In June 1861, Sokolski was abducted on his return to Constantinople Opel to Russia where he was imprisoned until his death in Kiev Pechersk Lavra.
