Joseph Tawadros

Joseph Tawadros (* 1983 in Cairo, Egypt ) is an Egyptian- Australian musician and composer. He plays the oriental lute, oud called.

Life

Tawadros is the nephew of the Egyptian trumpeter Yacoub Mansi and the grandson of the composer Oudspielers and Mansi Habib. When he was three years old, his family emigrated from Egypt to Australia.

He was trained in the Western classical tradition, and has earned a bachelor's degree in music at the University of New South Wales.

The style of Tawadros is described as eclectic. According to The Sydney Morning Herald he has " the oud retrieved from the traditional environment of the Middle East and inserting it into the field of classical music and jazz ." He has won the ARIA Award (Australian Recording Industry Award) for Best World Music Album in 2012 and 2013. He has worked with musicians such as John Abercrombie, Jack DeJohnette, Bela Fleck, Joey DeFrancesco, Jean -Louis Matinier or the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
