Joseph Volotsky

Joseph of Volokolamsk (also Iossif Wolozki, Russian Иосиф Волоцкий; * November 14, 1439 or 1440; † September 9, 1515 ) was a Russian monk, abbot and convent founder.

Joseph was born to a noble family as Ivan Sanin. In 1460 he entered the Borowsker Pafnuti Monastery (now Kaluga oblast ) a, whose abbot he after the death of the founder of the monastery Pafnuti Borowski in 1478. A little later he left because of disputes with many monks with some other the monastery and founded a monastery in 1479 at Volokolamsk (now Moscow Oblast ), which was named in a row after Joseph. He maintained close relations with the nobility, who knew the monastery with rich donations. In addition, Joseph pleaded for a close relationship between church and state. His monastery he established as a training center for the church hierarchy, which mainly recruited in the Orthodox Church from the ranks of monks. In order to fulfill this task, the monastery had to be financially secure and financially, Joseph founded the wealth of his monastery. As abbot he attached great importance to the outward observance of the monastic rule. 1579 Joseph was canonized by Volokolamsk.

Beginning of the 16th century arose between the " Iossifljanern " ( " Josifljanern " ), as the followers of Joseph are called, and monks such as the Nile to Sorsky, representing an ascetic life in simplicity and poverty for monasticism, to disputes. A Sobor in 1503 decided this issue in favor of the Iossifljaner. Proponents of ascetic monasticism direction were pushed back by and Iossifljaner who so much of the episcopate, to the most influential group in the Russian church of the 16th century.
