Joseph von Auffenberg

Joseph Freiherr von Auffenberg ( born August 25, 1798 in Freiburg im Breisgau, † December 25, 1857 ) was a German playwright and poet.

Life

Auffenberg studied from 1813 law at the Albert -Ludwigs- University of Freiburg and took 1815 in the Austrian service at the Battle of Waterloo part. Later was from Auffenberg lieutenant of the Guards Baden in Karlsruhe.

His dramas Pizarro and The Spartans were performed in Karlsruhe. The success encouraged him to write further plays. Auffenberg in 1822 a member of the Court Theater Committee and soon after its president. In 1832 he undertook a described by him as humorous pilgrimage to Granada and Cordoba trip to Spain, where he was attacked by robbers at Valencia and seriously wounded survived.

Auffenberg 1839 was appointed Grand Duke of Baden Chamberlain.

Auffenberg lost all his positions in 1849 because of a gaffe, which he had committed in a Dîner Grand Duke Leopold of Baden. Apparently he mimicked in a drunken state the Grand Duke behind his back by, but was caught and suspended from this case. Auffenberg moved then to his home town of Freiburg im Breisgau and lived with a servant in a house in the Imperial Road (now Kaiser-Joseph -Straße). To put it gave his life in recent years, many rumors, as you saw in Auffenberg allegedly " defective clothing " in indelicate guest houses - always accompanied by a black poodle. The assumption that Auffenberg was impoverished during his lifetime, but was refuted after his death: he bequeathed 39,000 florins to the hospital at Valencia del Cid, where they had him in 1832 after the robbery nursed back to health. 1,000 guilders, he inherited also his loyal companion of recent years, his poodle.

His grave is located at the Freiburg Old Cemetery. In addition to the completely weathered grave, which was created by Josef Alois Knittel, is there a monument in 1965, the Freiburg sculptress Eva Eisenlohr created.

Not determined for the stage is the poem Alhambra (Karlsruhe 1829-30, 3 volumes), a " Epos in dramatic form ," not without imagination, but without deeper life and without artistic level.

A complete edition of his works appeared in 22 volumes ( 3rd edition, Wiesbaden 1855), a selection in 7 volumes ( Wiesbaden 1850).
